Whiskies of Scotland Clynelish 18yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 1995

Item # 31911 750 mL

One of the older malt distilleries in Scotland, Clynelish was founded in 1819 and, save for a brief hiatus in the 1930s, has continued to make whisky of the highest order. Long a component of The Johnnie Walker, the company officially took a stake in 1916. After the building of the new distillery and the demolition of the original Old Brora facility, current owners Diageo began putting out a 14-year single malt, but older bottlings have been nonexistent until now. This rare 18-year was distilled in 1995 and bottled exclusively for us. After a few minutes, the opening notes of crystallized ginger and watermelon Jolly Rancher turn to Granny Smith apple, banana, and pineapple rind. There is an unctuous quality to the palate, but it is reigned in by crisp acidity, leaving the slightly smoky malt and salted butter finish lingering.

Staff Pick Notes

It is important as a spirits professional (and as a human being) to question and reevaluate our precepts. Looking back and trying things again, we often find our memories have been lying to us. Whiskies of Scotland: Clynelish 1995 debunked my poor opinion of Highland Scotch that I’ve been harboring for years. When I sat down to taste, I’ll admit that I was skeptical. I expected a palate of dainty fruit and maybe some oak and salt notes, but my assumptions were far from the truth. I found subtle notes of tropical fruit, smoked salt, caramel, and lasting wood spice. All of this served on a surprisingly silky texture. This whisky has quickly leapt to the top of my “To-Buy” list. I was a fool to have left Highland in the doghouse for so long.

Glossary

Scotch

As a synonym for Scottish, some people object to the term “Scotch” – but as far as their whisky goes, the Scottish people are required by law to classify the spirit as “Scotch whisky.”

Scotland

History:Distillation was brought to Scotland from Ireland by missionary monks in the 6th century. In 1644, the first taxes were imposed on Scottish distillers by England, with the result that most of the nation’s whisky was soon distilled illicitly. With the Parliament’s passing of the “Excise Act” in 1824, licensing fees for distilleries were much cheaper. Distilleries started to take out licenses, and since then, the distillation industry in Scotland has been continuously expanding....
