Ponce "Reto," Manchuela - 2022

Item # 32442 750mL

The wine comes from the high-altitude wine region east of Madrid where Victor de la Serna's own wine operation Finca Sandoval is based. The young winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce is passionate to produce wines from native varieties. This is his white from Albillo grape from cool-sited vineyards. Staff Pick Notes

A nervy, high acid white from the relatively new Manchuela DO in the 'meseta central' of Spain. This is a flat, dry region that grows heaps of grapes for brandy, but this wine is made from the ubiquitous Albillo grape. 'Albillo' may actually refer to a few different varietals, but no matter what you call it, it makes some intriguing wines. This one is exceptional for the quality. The aromas are delicate and floral with honeycomb-like notes. It has an unctuous texture that amplifies tropical fruits and waxy tones on the palette. It's kind of a thinker’s white wine. It doesn't jump out and announce itself immediately. But paired with salty food it lights up like a matchstick. The acidity and crisp fruit notes perk up nicely making it an ideal accompaniment to a meal.
