Staff Pick Notes

Another hidden gem from Italy! This time, we’re going to Valpolicella, within the Veneto region in the NE corner of Italy. Steeped in history built around the famous Amarone and Recioto wines, where the grapes are dried for months before being made into wine, Valpolicella can be a bit confusing when we realize there are wines within the region that do not undergo this drying. This bottling is one of them! The local grapes of Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara all show their distinctive flair here, in a pure and vibrant expression without any oak aging. With the freshness preserved, we are transported to a hiking trip in summer, where the forest berries hide within the ferns off of the main trail but are quite noticeable via their abundant fragrance in the warm breezes. For your next “red blend”, give Valpolicella a try!

Glossary

Corvina

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

Veneto

Valpolicella

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
