Franciscus van der Niepoort started his business in Portugal as a Port merchant with no vineyards of his own. Five generations later the Niepoort family still oversees production of Port along with dry wines from the Dão and Douro. Their Twisted Tinto exemplifies the family’s commitment to a good mix of innovation and tradition, blending Touriga Francesca and Touriga Nacional in a fresh, contemporary style. The juice is easy drinking with flavors of plums, dark berries and soft tannins. I am always on the hunt for a fun Tuesday night taco pairing and this was a swell match with pulled pork and grilled chicken tacos. I suspect it works well with burritos and quesadillas too!

The Dão and the Douro are the most important regions as far as red Portuguese table wine is concerned. Douro wines tend to be a bit fuller and fleshier than their Dão counterparts, which are generally lighter and higher in acidity. Reds from both regions are dense, rustic, and well-balanced.
