Les Terres Basses, Domaine Laballe - 2020

750 mL
Item # 35421

An historic estate that's well-known for their Armagnacs, however you should pay attention to their wines. This is a luscious, dry white wine with a core of fruit that's refreshing. Unoaked and full of fresh acidity that will work well with light meats and fish dishes.

Staff Pick Notes

Imagine the ripest, juiciest yellow grapefruit that you can. Not like gross, processed "diet" juice, but a fresh piece of fruit with no bitter or pithy elements. If this sounds appealing to you, then buy this bottle immediately! The wine is made from three grapes—Colombard, Ugni Blanc (a.k.a. Trebbiano Toscano), and Gros Manseng. Cognac lovers will certainly recognize these varieties commonly grown for distilling the classic French spirit, but the wines made from these grapes are also delicious. For pairings, I recommend bivalves or shellfish, particularly clams or scallops. If you are allergic to these foods, simply share this bottle with a friend.

Seeing what the Americans had done, the French would soon welcome the grape back into the fold, taking advantage of California's advances in winemaking...

Ugni Blanc

Known as Trebbiano in Italy, Ugni Blanc is best known as the main ingredient in Cognac.

Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
