Pinot Nero, Garlider - 2018

Item # 36582 750mL

Cool climate Pinot Noir, made by a husband & wife organic farmstead located in Velturno/Fedlthurns, a tiny alpine village nestled in the northerly reaches of Alto-Adige. The vineyards are situated on the steep south-facing mountain slopes with poor rocky soil that brings out great complexity in the wine.

Staff Pick Notes

An expressive Pinot Noir from the Eisack valley in South Tyrol. The vineyards in the basin are in a warm micro-climate surrounded on all sides by the white peaks of the Dolomites. The diurnal shift in temperature makes for wines with razor-sharp acidity and depth. Garlider is well known for their aromatic whites, and this is the only red that they produce which makes it feel all the more special. It's a stellar example of the Pinot Noir grape's ability to transmit terroir. Fragrant mountain berries and herbs greet you in the glass. On the palate you can taste cherry preserves, anise, and some bitter roots. A wine like this is made for mushroom risotto or herb roasted pork loin. The focus and clarity is a thing of beauty.

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Trentino-Alto Adige

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...
