Côtes du Rhône Villages Valréas, Clos Bellane - 2021

A classic Rhône blend from the northernmost village of Valréas, the highest elevation and coolest climate section of the Southern Rhône. Extraction is kept to a minimum, only indigenous yeasts are used, and the wines are aged in a combination of tank, concrete, and large older barrels. Winemaker Stéphane Vedeau uses a minimalist approach to let the wine speak for itself. It is showing beautifully today with vibrant red fruit and spice notes.

Stephane Vedeau was drawn to the idea of a fresher, more elegant style of Côtes du Rhône when he purchased Clos Bellane in 2007. At 400 meters, it’s the highest altitude site in the Southern Rhone. The pure limestone slopes face east, limiting the vines’ exposure during the hottest time of day. Vedeau converted his entire operation to organic production within three short years of owning the estate. He let’s the pureness of his fruit shine, fermenting with only native yeasts and aging in concrete and a bit of older barrel. Give it a try, and experience both the ripeness of the Rhône and the coolness of the Côtes.
