Quality ingredients are the keys to the current cocktail revolution and you can find them in any category. It's easy to overlook wine as an actual cocktail element, but it's a part of so many things we like to drink - think Sangria or spritzes as a jumping off point. I recently used this juicy Merlot to build a cocktail that included brandy, muddled blackberries, lime juice and simple syrup. The cocktail was great, but the bonus is that the wine is also delicious. Win win! This grape often gets short shrift, but people, you don't know what you are missing! The purity of fruit in this bottle really shines, ripe but not jammy. Just a hint of vanilla and spice made for an ideal layer in my cocktail recipe, but this wine doesn't need to hide behind the mask of the drink. It's a beauty on its own.
