The Gattinara zone is located in the northwest of Piedmont. Here, Nebbiolo goes by the name of Spanna and the wines express themselves uniquely due to the volcanic, chalk and iron-lade soils. Aged for three years in both old casks and bottle before release. You'll find aromas of herbs, chinato even and a chalky mineral on the finish.

In my perennial quest for aromatic, floral reds, finding this Gattinara feels like uncovering some rare orchid in a swamp. It's an absolute steal. For a fraction of the price of fellow Piedmonte cousins Barolo and Barbaresco, DOCG Gattinara in the northwest offers similar if not greater longevity due to especially robust tannins and acidity nurtured in an ideal climate for Nebbiolo. Iron-rich soils infuse a rustic minerality, yet this is a somewhat more aromatic expression of the grape. An elegant bouquet of violets, roses, herbs, olives, and anise blooms from the glass to complement tertiary earthy notes on the palate. A great value that's ready to drink now.

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco.
