Cruse Wine Co. "Monkey Jacket" - 2022

750 mL
Item # 37455

Made from Valdiguié, Tannat and other heritage varieties, this pure. juicy red wine is a delight at the table. We love the minerality, refreshing acidity and grippy tannins on the finish. Winemaker Mike Cruse sources his fruit from various vineyards and is turning out stunning wines with his minimal interventionist style.

Staff Pick Notes

This Northern Californian blend is 53% Valdiguié with the remainder being old-vine Carignan, a red field blend, Petite Sirah, and Tannat. It is a wine of impressive vibrancy and brightness on the nose, but with a palate of late summer in California: sunny, dry, and serious. Medium-bodied with notes of cranberry and raspberry and a nice tannic structure. It can be your everyday table wine and will pair nicely anything light and bright like a green salad or blue cheese or chocolate.

More About This Wine

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
