Distillates made from the gentian roots and flowers are common in southern Europe. The warming effect meant the shepherds of the high elevation could tend to their flocks during the cold months while the natural herbs and roots fortified their immune systems. Rossi D'Angera Spitz is such a gentian liqueur in the same vein as the ever-popular Suze. Made on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Lombardy, this liqueur shows an exquisite balance between sweet and bitter. Lemons, Seville oranges, Alpine flowers, and underlying spice notes make this a wonderfully quaffable bitter liqueur.
