Bitters were born as medicines and evolved into alcoholic drinks in the middle of 19th century. They can be drunk on their own or in a cocktail, and are supposed to be used before a meal to stimulate the appetite. They originate in Venice, a city that traditionally traded spices from the east. It is now a very common drink found all over Italy. Rossi d'Angera Bitter has been around for about one hundred years and the recipe used is still the same: the same herbs, spices, and roots are used. I find this drink particularly fresh on the palate. The flavors of the ingredients are noticeable: herbal notes, spices, and citrus linger on the palate and, after one sip, you want another. Try it alone with an ice cube and a slice of orange!
