As we get on in years we tend to avoid dessert wines the way we avoid Cadbury eggs. The rich flavors and hedonistic sweetness that once allured our younger selves is now, “Too rich for my blood.” Sadly this default position drives us away from great dessert wines with balance. This Vin Santo is generous without laying it on thick. There’s an array of cooked stone fruits, beeswax, honeyed oranges, and preserved tangerines. There’s no denying the sweetness but with acid to match, this wine has lift to make it refreshing rather than cloying.
