Husband and wife team Scott Blackwell and Ann Marshall are transforming the landscape of Southern spirits and reviving a wealth of heritage coded in the ancient flavors of the region right in the heart of the Lowcountry. Their Rye Whiskey is made from heirloom ancient Italian Abruzzi rye grains long with the balance of the mash picked-up by heirloom white corn. The heirloom grains rightfully take center stage in the whiskey with a procession of notes that take-off with freshly tilled earth and autumnal themes followed by a warm batch of waffles coated in butter and syrup with a side of red berries and apples and a serving of fresh black coffee laced with cinnamon. A robust and endearing whiskey that is engaging and easy to drink at the same time.
Can spirits have terroir? That's what the dynamic, husband-wife duo at High Wire are exploring with their lineup of superb, hand-crafted spirits. Based in Charleston, SC, and inspired by the burgeoning food scene there, they source most of their grains locally from the surrounding Lowcountry. Their rye is made using an ancient Italian rye Abruzzo (malted and unmalted) along with heirloom white corn. The nose delivers soft butterscotch, baked bread, and caramel aromas, all of which carry over onto the palate along with baking spices, cloves and cinnamon. It's rich, soft, luxurious, a real stunner in the glass and a showcase of rye's inner character, with a southern accent, of course.
