Gerhard Pittnauer had to become a self-taught winemaker after the unfortunate passing of his father during a time of discord in the Austrian wine market. He began to formulate his blueprint of what made great wines in his eyes and it seemingly came down to biodynamic farming practices, emphasizing growing wines versus making them to produce ‘living’ wines. All work is done manually with quality over speed taking precedent while incorporating temperature controlled steel tanks and pneumatic presses to further experiment and evolve the wines. This Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt based blend is bright with grippy tannins and full of explosive spice character with notes of all spice, sweet tobacco, tart cherries and prickly red pepper whilst a bit of Merlot richens the texture for a punchy picnic red.

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.
