Mount Eden Vineyards, Estate Chardonnay - 2018

Item # 41572 750mL

Mount Eden's Chardonnay grapes are harvested when slightly yellow to yellow-green and are pressed without crushing. All of the juice is barrel-fermented in new and one-year-old French Burgundy barrels, where the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged on the lees for ten months prior to bottling. The Chardonnay is then cellared for two years before being released for sale.

Staff Pick Notes

California Chardonnays still live in the shadow of their oaky, buttery past, despite the fact that these days winemakers are producing all manner of styles. Mount Eden was never one for trends and has always made a singular style that was decidedly not Californian. The vines descend from Burgundy cuttings brought over by Paul Masson and grow above the fog line. Yields are kept low, producing a wine full of depth and character. It's full bodied yet crisp with honeyed citrus notes and a hint of oak from aging in 30% new barrels. It's an exceptionally refined wine that shows what terroir can do.
