Winemakers have a complicated relationship with the term “fruit forward." But for Domaine Fery, an organic, family-run winery in the village of Échevronne, the term is something different: a reference to its history. The estate was founded by local farmer Louis Jacob in 1922 as a small scale berry farm, which produced a range of aromatic red and black currants so renowned that they were eventually used as the “secret” ingredient in Chanel #5. The farm transitioned to cultivating grapes in 1969 (certified organic since 2011) and today produces wine from grapes grown on tiny parcels throughout the Cote D’Or. Their Cote de Nuits Village is the perfect introduction to high-toned Burgundy: aromas of red cherry, black pepper, and toast give way to a bright, earthy palate with notes of raspberry, spice, and a lingering finish. Fruit done right.
