Pinotage is a cross between two formidable grapes: Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Each of these varieties thrive in the right conditions and we've never found such an incredible bottling as this. It's unlike others as it's the opposite of forced dark fruits and is devoid of new oak lending itself to pure, unadulterated fruit. Pinotage is South Africa's signature grape and we've found an exemplary version that's age-worthy. Halagasha is from the Xhosa language and means aspiration or goal to finally make a great Pinotage. This comes from the Famouns vineyard site and is from vines planted in the 1970s in granite soils. Some of the fruit was fermented carbonically and the juice was left on the skins for 10 days. Aged in older, 500 liter barrels. Winemaker Jurgen Gouws is one of the natural wine leaders in the country.
South Africa is often lumped together, under some arbitrary umbrella heading, with the other wine-producing regions of the southern hemisphere - South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc. This does a severe injustice both to the fantastic wines of South Africa and to the wine consumer: the region is peerless in its harmonious synthesis of New and Old World winemaking styles.
