Pikasi is a negociant project of Slovenian winemaker and professional ballroom dancer, Matic Rodica. Inspired by dancing, the silhouettes on the label were drawn from Matic’s own dance photos. At this point, I could go on about how the wine dances in the glass with grace and aplomb, and it does, but let's get down to brass tacks here. This wine is an incredible value. There is a silky, velveteen mouthfeel with weight that you rarely encounter at this price point. A wonderfully fresh expression of Barbera, rich aromas of cherry, raspberry, and a touch of white pepper take the lead and end with a long, luxurious finish. I paired it with a ragu of sausage and veal, where its perfect balance of acid and tannin worked wonders. It's an incredibly versatile food wine and also the perfect partner for dancing by oneself.

Barbera

Barbera is grown all over Italy, but the best examples of this red grape come from Piedmont, where it is made into all manner of wines - from easy-drinking quaffers to serious, cellar-worthy bottlings. Wherever they fall on the spectrum of stodginess, however, they are generally ruby-colored, full-bodied, and highly acidic, with remarkably low levels of tannins.
