Eschendorfer Lump Silvaner, Erste Lage, Horst Sauer - 2017

750 mL
Item # 43035

Let's dissect this wine starting with the local white grape that goes by the name, Silvaner - a grape that thrives at this estate. This is an Erste Lage wine which is akin to the Premier Cru labeling you see in Burgundy which means this is premium wine from the Horst Sauer estate. The Eschendorfer Lump single vineyard site has soils that are limestone-rich which contributes to the longer cellar life this wine has. The wine is dry and today is run by Horst and his daughter, Sandra. We love tradition and the fact that this Franken wine is in the local glass bottle shape that's known as the Bocksbeutel.

Staff Pick Notes

This wine is cursed by unfamiliarity. In America, Silvaner has always been in the shadow of its more famous brethren: Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Not to mention it’s sealed in a glass bottle that only Frankeners of Germany recognize. If you can look past all that and take the leap, you’ll not regret it. Once the bottle is open the aroma erupts from the bottle like a genie: river rocks, peeled citrus, and fresh balsam. The acidity tickles the senses and the flavors are crystal clear. I know nothing on this bottle looks familiar. Sometimes you just have to heed a friend’s earnest urging.
