Freisa "Nuda & Cruda", Gasparda - 2016

750 mL
Item # 43051

Freisa is a grape from Piedmont related to Nebbiolo however it's starkly different as the wine is bolder, darker in color and flavors. It does though share a backbone with its parentage making this an ideal red wine companion at dinner. This is a dry, still version of the grape as it used to be made in varying styles.

Staff Pick Notes

"Nuda e cruda" translates to "naked and raw," but the real meaning is "straight to the point, no boundaries, pure and bold!” The grapes are hand-harvested, native yeast is used and after hanging for two years on its lees, the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Studies found that this grape is likely the parent of the more world famous neighbor grape, Nebbiolo! The family behind this wine used to make it just for themselves, but began selling it in 2010. Such a great achievement! Freisa grapes make rustic wines. This one has concentrated flavors: red fruit and cherry are predominant and the tannins are very balanced. I would pair it with the traditional dishes of the Piemonte region: braised short ribs or agnolotti.

Piedmont

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara. Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Freisa

The Freisa grape produces delicious red wines in a variety of styles - both still and sparkling, dry and sweet. In each of its many iterations, Freisa remains a very fruit-driven, juicy variety; the wines make excellent matches with light appetizers.
