Menetou-Salon is a town in the eastern part of the Loire Valley. This is a red version, as they can also be white or rosé, and is made from Pinot Noir that comes from younger vines (20 years in age) planted in clay and limestone soils. Unoaked.

Just southwest of Sancerre and on similar soils, Menetou-Salon is an insiders favorite high quality, value alternative for Sancerre Blanc. Meanwhile Sancerre Rouge has increasingly become my go-to recommendation for a French Pinot Noir under $40: outperforming entry-level Burgundies and showing more classic varietal characteristics than even the best of the IGP Pinot Noir export brands. So it is no surprise that this Rouge from Domaine de Champarlan delivers fantastic value for a heritage Pinot Noir appellation. It's produced in small enough quantities that we don't always have it in stock, but, when we do, this is always my first recommendation for the category.
