Domaine Nerantzi, Malagousia - 2023

Item # 44508 750mL

The foothills of Mount Menoikio are strewn with pottery fragments in its calcareous sandy loam soils. Nerantzi Mitropoulos' vineyards and winery are here, along with border of Macedonia and Thrace. His aim is to reintroduce forgotten grape varieties and winemaking techniques of Greece. His daughter Eva, trained in Burgundy, now assists him in his quest. This stainless steel aged Malagousia shows off intense stone fruit aromatics, and is medium-bodied. It would pair beautifully with oregano and lemon roasted chicken.

Staff Pick Notes

Malagousia is a nearly extinct grape. Now it's more available and known around the world. It's an aromatic grape that makes wine with aromas of flower and pears. On the palate you can enjoy peach, citrus and herbal flavors. Domaine Nerantzi started its production in 1988. Originally the wine made was mainly for their own family consumption. After about ten years they started to expand. Neranzi's daughter, after a period of training in Burgundy, is now helping her father. The land is an ideal terroir for wine making: five mountains protect the river valley from heavy winds. Vine management is now strictly organic with minimal intervention and native yeast fermentation is practiced. A well balanced wine with a great long finish!
