Staff Pick Notes

Speaking to the hedonistic pleasure I get from drinking Vilmart & Cie Champagnes certainly gets me emotional. A vintage rosé sparkler comprised of 60% Pinot Noir Rosé de Saignée and 40% Chardonnay, Laurent Champs employs aging and fermentation in small barriques while restricting malo to create a broad-shouldered, structured Champagne. Its crisp intensity walks the line of beauty, precision, and power. This dense sparkler absolutely demands to be put on the table, with a dense mousse that feels like pins and needles pressing on the palate. Flavors of strawberry shortcake, tangerine, mint, crème fraîche, and pastry dough; this really encapsulates the sort of cuvée meant for drinkers who want a complex, engaging experience from their sparklers. Vilmart is truly exceptional.

Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

These winemakers control every aspect of grape cultivation and vinification, from the vine to the finished bottle, which is...

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
