Staff Pick Notes

A marvelously rich, tangy white wine with clean acidity that balances it all beautifully. The Herzegovina region is known for whites made from the indigenous grape Žilavka. These wines are oily and unctuous on the palate, providing a wonderful counterpoint to the local cuisine, which is heavy on grilled fish and meats with lots of herbs. Škegro Family Winery is in the town of Radišici at the base of the Dinaric Alps. Their terraced vineyards are planted in layered soils composed of calcareous marl, sandstone, and flint. The grapes are either whole cluster or direct pressed depending on the site, and all fermentation occurs in stainless steel and remains on the lees for six to eight months. Lush floral aromas segue into salted peach, quince, and almond on the palate. As locals toast here: "živjeli!"
