Leviano, Pinto de Paiva, Fernando Magalhães - 2021

Fun fact: Quinta da Palmirinha was the first certified biodynamic winery in Portugal, meaning that they farm organically and take into account the health of their entire ecosystem (as opposed to just the grapevines). They also pioneered the usage of chestnut flowers (also grown onsite) that have been dried and crushed as a replacement for sulphur dioxide as a preservative. Their Leviano Branco is made from 100% Azal, the second-most widely planted grape in Minho, which is primarily used in Vinho Verde. The grapes see 2-3 weeks of maceration with the skins, giving it an amber hue with deep textural complexity and a solid tannic bite, traits that are balanced beautifully by lively acidity and a light body, alongside characteristics of minerality, stone fruit and black tea. I really enjoyed this with a platter of make-your-own spring rolls!
