Madson Wines, Gamay Noir - 2021

Item # 46790 750mL

From vines sourced from the Santa Rita Hills. The vines are wind-swept, keeping the vineyard temperatures cool. This gamay was carbonically fermented with whole clusters of fruit. After a spontaneous fermentation, the wine was aged for 6 months in used oak. Excellent with kebabs.

Staff Pick Notes

"Farm first, vinify later" is the ethos that Cole Thomas of Madson Wines works with. He he adopted it during his time as an organic vegetable farmer and edible landscaper. Through ventures to New Zealand and Australia, Thomas was enraptured by the process and technique in natural wine production, which led him to found his label in spring 2018. He farms all his grapes organically, even if he is sourcing the fruit from other vineyards, where he always focuses on cool climate pockets. His Gamay Noir captures the essence of Beaujolais in California: alluring with the evocative florals expected of Fleurie or Brouilly. Violets, blackberry, and deep red cherries all dance across the palate with jovial energy. It captures those airy, fresh notes through whole cluster fermentation while giving feathery texture to the wine.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
