Kasel Nies’Chen Kabinett, Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt - 1996

Item # 47127 750mL

This library release direct from the estate comes from the Nies'Chen vineyard, which produces mineral wines with soaring acidity. This structured off-dry white has aged beautifully, in ideal conditions, and is now wonderfully expressive with tertiary aromas. Pair with Königsberger Klopse.

Staff Pick Notes

Here's a rare and brief (it won't last long) opportunity to experience a 26-year-old Riesling that is more mature than most 26-year-old humans. The 1996 vintage was bottled by the father of Dr. Karsten Weyand, the current operator of the estate. The estate has been making wine since 1349. They work vineyards in the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer Valleys. Neich’sen is a Grosse Lage vineyard on steep slopes that descend onto the Ruwer River. This wine is noble and majestic. In the glass, the wine is deep gold, almost amber, a sign that densely concentrated fruit is going to hit your palate. The feel is opulent in the mouth and balanced with a gentle punch of acidity to liven things up. Sweet spices adorn fruit flavors of roasted figs and roasted pineapple. Try this with a funky washed rind cheese like Vermont’s Oma.

Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
