Faß 12 Unterstenberg Riesling, Peter Lauer - 2024

750 mL
Item # 47152

The Unterstenberg vineyard forms a lower portion of the Kupp hill. This is from barrel # 12 of this particular harvest. This barely off-dry white is aromatic with orchard fruit, herbs, citrus, and smoke. Absolutely approachable today, but would benefit from a few years in cellar. Pair with chicken musakhan.

Staff Pick Notes

The Lauers have been farming vines and making wine since 1830. They have been privileged to work the incredible terroir of the Ayler Kupp estate. Here, the hill is treacherously steep, the soil is made of blue and gray slate. It is also divided into a few parcels. The wine in this bottle comes from the Grand Cru Unstersteberg plot which lies at the bottom of the Kupp hill, just above the Saar River. Year after year, it is aged in the same barrel (fass 12) that contains the natural yeast that ferments the must. The wine is lush, round, and creamy on the palate. Like any great Riesling, it shows orchard, citrus, and tropical fruit. There are herbal, floral, and smoke notes that add layers to the profile. Acidity and minerality supply the freshness and structure. Gorgeous with a cave aged Swiss Gruyere.

Riesling

Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
