Monument Wine Company, Daughter Red - 2021

Item # 48065 750mL

Not all young people go to Portland to retire; some go there to make wine. Winemaker Tyler Magyar moved there from New York, and his small operation is an urban winery. This medium-bodied blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah uses fruit from the Willamette Valley and Columbia Gorge. Pair with a Thai brunch spread.

Staff Pick Notes

I was immediately intrigued when I saw this new addition to the Astor shelves, an interesting blend of two of my favorite varietals: 75% Pinot Noir (from the Rodriguez family vineyard, Willamette valley) and 25% Syrah (from the McAllister vineyard, Columbia gorge). Fascinated, I took a bottle home that night and was not disappointed. It’s gorgeous. A friendly electricity on the palate, crunchy, high-toned fruit, notes of Ribena, and light, powdery tannins. There is a delicate purity to this bright and aromatic wine that I find simply irresistible. From New York native winemaker Tyler Magyar, “My approach is simple: make honest, thoughtful wines without adornment or cut corners. The most important thing is that the wines are sincere, from the vineyard sources and vinification to the label aesthetics and the people I work with.”

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...

Oregon

The largest wine region in Oregon is the Willamette Valley, lying between the cities of Portland and Eugene and home to most of Oregon’s wineries. As it does not have one homogeneous climate, it has been broken up into several different AVAs. In the best of them, the perfect amounts of wind, rain, sun exposure, and altitude combine to give Pinot Noir the warm days and cool nights it needs in order to thrive. Combine that with good drainage and poor soils, and you’ve got the perfect environment...
