Txakoli is already a style of wine that excites wine geeks like myself. These are generally crisp racey and vibrant white wines made with the Hondarrabi Zuri grape in Basque country in Spain. However, this is not that. This is the much harder to find Honarrabi Beltza which is the black skinned version of this grape. Until we got this into the shop recently I had only ever read about this so it developed a mythical status to me, but as I am myself of Basque descent I have been dying to try some. And wow, was it worth the wait. Very aromatic notes of black pepper and a combination of red and black fruit notes. While this has darker fruit notes, it is still fairly light and, like its white counterpart, has enough acidity to keep fresh and not at all weighed down. A wine that I want year round with a light chill and Iberico Ham.
