Staff Pick Notes

The iconic Remelluri estate lies in the Rioja Alavesa. Their reserva is the original wine from Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri. Siblings Telmo and Amaia Rodriguez took the reins of the project from their father in 2009 and with the assistance of Pablo Eguzkiza, they've implemented changes to the vineyards to convert towards organic farming (certified since 2014). 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano, this sees spontaneous fermentation in both stainless steel and old foudre with aging in barrels for 21 months before resting in bottle for over 5 years. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...

The origin of Spanish winemaking, Rioja has been the benchmark for Spanish wines in the international market for over two hundred years, and remains so to this day. Tempranillo is the star of the red wines here, though its expression can vary wildly from producer to producer. Traditionally-styled Riojas tend to be subtle and soft, and often have high levels of acidity to ensure their survival through the lengthy ageing process. The more modern producers are making powerful, dark,...
