The first ever of its kind, for this special edition release the flaghship ancho liqueur, made by naturally air drying freshly harvested local poblano chiles in the sun for a month, is then aged for 2yrs in American White Oak casks. The chiles are still very alive in this liqueur, simmering under the surface but the standout notes of ripe summer canteloupe, black tea and gingerbread are a revelation. One of the most unique and well done releases of the year.

Do you ever wish you could capture the genre-bending energy of the YouTube Series “Hot Ones” in a bottle? Allow me to explain. The format of the show is simple: guests eat ten hot wings, each progressively spicier than the last, while answering questions. Guests discover how peppers separate fact from spin. In the same vein, the team at Ancho Reyes, a Puebla-based distillery founded by Ivan Saldaña of Montelobos fame, has created a liqueur that defies spin.They start with simple ingredients: poblano chiles that are sun-dried for 20 days. The chiles are then macerated in a neutral sugar cane spirit for six months before spending two years in ex-Bourbon barrels. The result is a spirit that’s totally unique: vegetal and sweet before slowly giving way to notes of vanilla and ending with a burst of heat. Mix into a cocktail or sip neat.

 Barrel. Tequila is aged in white oak barrels. Normally a barrel has a 200 liter capacity (approx. 60 gallons). Often purchased from cognac or bourbon producers. Sometimes other woods are used.
