Muga Blanco, Rioja - 2022

Item # 50064 750 mL

Isaac Muga is one of Rioja's great characters and his wines share his exuberant personality. His white balances spicy oak and floral quince flavors. Medium-bodied and quite flavorful; enjoy this with zesty shrimp or chicken dishes.

Staff Pick Notes

I must say it is very pleasing to see this wonderful white Rioja back. It means Muga are still doing a great job and summer must be just around the corner! Made with 90% Viura (an indigenous Riojan grape) and 10% Malvasia, this wine is first slow-fermented in new French oak and aged three months on the lees. The nose is more powerful with this vintage, showing peach, apple and even a touch of pineapple. The palate is perfectly balanced: plush on one hand but with great balancing bitterness/acidity on the other. The fruit is obvious with a touch of candied lemon zest on the finish. Thanks, Muga, for another great vintage nicely done. Cheers, Stephen W.

Isaac intended to position himself in the center of many already well-respected bodegas, like La Rioja...

Rioja

The origin of Spanish winemaking, Rioja has been the benchmark for Spanish wines in the international market for over two hundred years, and remains so to this day. Tempranillo is the star of the red wines here, though its expression can vary wildly from producer to producer. Traditionally-styled Riojas tend to be subtle and soft, and often have high levels of acidity to ensure their survival through the lengthy ageing process. The more modern producers are making powerful, dark,...
