Staff Pick Notes

To the untrained eye, landlocked Umbria is easy to miss. And yet, for those adventurous enough, Umbria offers an abundance of visual delights and delicious wine that remains under the radar for now. That said, Umbrian wine is gaining notoriety thanks to the work of Azienda Agraria Moretti Omero, an organic, family-run farm and vineyard that’s been making award-winning cuvees since 1992. The jewel of the Moretti estate is their “Vignalunga,” cuvee, which is made entirely from old-vine Sagrantino that spends 24 months in French oak and six months in bottle before release. The 2021 release doesn’t disappoint: aromas of plum, blackberry jam, and orange zest give way to a rich and complex palate, with notes of both dark fruit and damp earth, akin to cross between an Amarone and a Taurasi. Pair with rich dishes and enjoy before it hits it big.

More About This Wine

Sagrantino

One of Italy’s least-known noble grapes. Winemakers from the region of Umbria have worked to ensure that Sagrantino continues to be cultivated. The grape is made into the eponymous Sagrantino di Montefalco, as well as being a component of Rosso di Montefalco (the Rosso is mostly made up of Sangiovese, with Sagrantino adding depth and character). Sagrantino has the power and structure of the biggest wines in Italy, yet still shows opulent fruit redolent of mixed wild berries.

Responsible for the eponymous Sagrantino di Montefalco as well as being a component of Rosso di Montefalco, Sagrantino has the power and structure of the biggest wines in Italy, yet still shows opulent fruit redolent of mixed wild berries.
