This dry red blend of Cabernet Franc, Blaufränkisch, and Chambourcin is aged in neutral oak for 18 months before bottling. Fresh, bright, and highly drinkable, this has aromas of dark fruits and peppers, and spice. Pair with pit beef and tiger sauce.

More About This Wine

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.

Chambourcin

A dark-berried French hybrid, popular in the Loire in the 1970s. The deeply colored, aromatic wine it produces is far better than that of most hybrids. It has largely been abandoned in France, and today most plantings of Chambourcin can be found on Australia's east coast.

Cabernet Franc

Relegated to moderate obscurity in modern times, Cabernet Franc is in fact the proud parent of the attention-hogging Cabernet Sauvignon (after an illicit affair with Sauvignon Blanc a hundred-odd years ago). Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends.
