Pago Casa Gran, Tastnou - 2024

750 mL
Item # 52561

From a shaded plot of Syrah, the grapes ripen more slowly, resulting in a dry red with a little lower alcohol. Young and fresh, the grapes were picked at night to preserve aroma. Fermented in stainless steel, this was bottled without aging. Pair this light-bodied pale red with a spread of conservas and olives.

Staff Pick Notes

So this is a fun and intriguing wine that threads a difficult needle: vivid, ripe flavors with quite low alcohol and none of the compromises often encountered in a low-ABV red. There’s no carbonic maceration, it’s not delicate or propped up by a cloudy, natty texture. The closest comparison is probably Frappato, but without the Sicilian grape’s distinct aroma and flavor that – let’s face it – isn’t for everyone. This one is; Tastnou’s fresh, zingy Syrah will be a crowd pleaser for sipping and accompanying small bites. Didactically, for us wine nerds who, it also provides a good example of how alcohol content is integral to the perception of a wine’s body and how it invigorates certain aromatics and flavor compounds. This is apparent if you’ve had alcohol-removed wine made from good quality grapes. Here it’s not the disappointment of some

More About This Wine

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
