Clendenen Family Vineyards was started in 2000 as a legacy for the children of wine legend Jim Clenenden, 'The Mind Behind' Au Bon Climat winery, as well as being a passion project to highlight interesting grape varietals that may be unexpected from Cali winemaking. At Clendenen you will find varietals such as Aligote, the underrated white grape of Burgundy and one of my personal favorites. I was surprised to see it come from Santa Barbara, but I should have known that anything from Jim and his family would be worthwhile. Aromas of honeysuckle and lemon yogurt lead to fresh lemon and beautiful minerality on the palate. The crisp acid that ABC is known for makes it hard to believe this wine goes through malolactic as well as fermentation in neutral French oak. A dream with seared scallops and mango salsa.

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Aligoté

The "other" white grape of Burgundy, Aligoté plays a struggling second fiddle to the regal white grape of the region, Chardonnay. Older Aligoté vines have been known to produce wines of high quality, displaying lovely citrusy and at times nutty characteristics - but even so, the remaining plantings of the grape are fast being uprooted to make even more space for the cultivation of Chardonnay.
