Crémant d'Alsace Brut, Domaine Bohn - NV

750 mL
Item # 54138

A dry sparkling wine with incredible character as the wine spent nearly 2 years aging on the lees after the second fermentation. Made from 40 year old vines of mostly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir planted in schist and sandstone soils. A fine bubble follows fresh minerals on the palate. This comes from a 9 hectare estate run by Bernard Bohn and his son, Arthur. Together they farm plots mostly on back breaking schist soils.

Staff Pick Notes

Domaine Bohn is the house of father-and-son team Bernard and Arthur Bohn, whose family has cultivated vines in Alsace since the 18th century. From the hillsides of blue shale and slate soil, the family has maintained Organic practices for 3 generations, now observing biodynamic principles like permanent wild cover crops and no tilling, ambient yeasts fermentation and minimal sulfur additions. This non-vintage Brut is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Blanc, and 20% Pinot Noir. A méthode traditionnelle sparkling, with a minimum of 24 months en lees before disgorgement. A nose of Normandy cider, even heading towards calvados. Rich and toasted with a beautifully golden hue. The bubble was perfect with a developed mousse and persistent small bubbles. This rustic of sparkling wine was graceful and loved being wide open on the table.

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Alsace

Located on the eastern border of France, on the west bank of the Upper Rhine, adjacent to Germany and Switzerland, Alsace represents the intersection of two wholly different wine cultures that have given birth to a third. Once part of the Holy Roman Empire, Alsace was gradually put under French sovereignty during the 17th Century and eventually made one of the provinces of France. Yet, as evidenced by the persistece of a dialect of Upper German in the region even today, Alsace's ties to Germany...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
