Chardonnay de Marne et d'Argile, Eric Thill - 2025

750 mL
Item # 54559

Eric Thill runs his estate with his wife, Bérengère in Gevingey in the gorgeous region of the Jura of eastern France. With only 5 hectares of old vines, 3 are planted to Chardonnay and this one comes from vines planted in clay and marne soils which are rich in minerals and formed, long before any of us existed, by the seabeds that covered the area. Fresh and mineraled on the palate with yellow fruits and floral aromas.

Staff Pick Notes

Eric Thill makes this lovely Chardonnay in the Côtes du Jura. The wine ages in barrels that allow it to contact the air which promotes flavors of roasted nuts and yeast. It has a slick, oily texture that is pleasing to swirl on your palate. Fresh apples, lemon curd, salt, and toast are other flavors that appear in layers. Thill moved from Alsace to Jura enamored with the commitment to organic and biodynamic farming amongst the vignerons in the region. He believes that great wine is made on the vineyard. His cellar practices are hands off and non interventionist with barely anything added in the process.

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...

Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). The true specialty of the region,...
