Tasting Notes

Distilled from a fermented mash of peat-malted Scottish Barley, aged and bottled by Clear Creek Distillery. The aromas of sweet malt, honey and bitter chocolate were among the first things we noticed with the peat smoke coming in to play on the finish.

I have always loved a good surprise, especially when I surprise myself. Long ago I convinced my brain that all peated whiskies went into the do not like category, but I often taste peaty spirits and think, Wow! This is actually delicious! Here's a prime example from an operation whose products I already love: Clear Creek Distillery's ode to Lagavulin - McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt.The nuance and complexity in this dram are striking, particularly when factoring in the age (only three years...say what?!). Peat certainly jumps out, but quickly melds into a dry, woody - but not too oaky nose. Slightly malty and medicinal on the palate, this thing really comes together in a way that is remarkably balanced. Well surprise, surprise, surprise!
