Crémant de Jura, Domaine de Montbourgeau - NV

750 mL
Item # 19967

Here is a delicious sparkler from the lovely (and ever sheltered from the dangers of spoofy modern winemaking) Jura mountains. From a top producer in Étoile, the wine ressembles a Champagne in that it is yeasty and full of mineral flavors and lip-smacking acidity.

Staff Pick Notes

At the heart of the illustrious wine region Jura lies the small villages of L’Étoile AOC. L’Étoile translates to The Star; Thought to come from the five hills surrounding the village, and you will find one the front label of all Montbourgeau's wines. Domaine de Montbourgeau has produced wines since the 1920s, founded by grandfather of current Vigneronne, Nicole Deriaux. Montbourgeau is rightly regarded as a cornerstone of traditional winemaking in the region. The wine with us here is a traditional method sparkling wine. Aged on lees for 18 to 24 months and fully embracing the semi-oxidative complexity that comes with that. Also a Brut Zéro (with no added dosage of sugar), meaning this is an extremely dry, crisp, and focused cuvee. Expressive nose of green apple, lime zest, and white peach, with a chalky mineral undertone.

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...

Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). The true specialty of the region,...
