While wine from Slovenia may be new to me and you, viticulture and winemaking actually predate the Roman Empire and therefore France, Spain and Germany. Slovenia, not to be confused with Slovakia of Czechoslovakia, is tucked up the the Austrian alpine plane, south of Austria, east of Italy and northwest of Croatia and is home to some amazing terrior that is perfect for the production of wine. Here the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio lives up to its name of Gris in French meaning grey. Pinot Grigio, a mutation of the Pinot Noir, with pink/ grey skins instead of the dark red of the Noir. I was really not expecting a pink copper colored wine when I first poured this into my glass. Extended skin maceration & lees aging and a small portion of barrel maturation give this wine a beautiful pinkish hue & nice textured structure with a light crisp finish.

Pinot Grigio is an Italian synonym for the French Pinot Gris variety, but many more people have had Pinot Grigio than a Pinot Gris.
