Basalt and volcanic soils are ideal for white wines and the white Garganega thrives on it in the vineyards which are located in the Alpone Valley. The Monte Majore vineyard is one of Soave's best-known sites stretching all around the top of the extinct volcano of the same name. The Posenato family has 1.5 hectares of Garganega vines and they were planted by pergola in 1948. The Le Albare estate is in its 4th generation of production under the direction of Stefano Posenato. Although fine Soaves such as this are meant to be enjoyed in their youth, this has the pedigree to age for a good decade.

Garganega is the starring grape for Soave wintes from Veneto, and 'Monte Majore' is certainly a star (the smiley face printed on the cork helps). The Posenato family are fourth generation winemakers, and the Le Albare estate has been creating beautiful wines since 1948. The Garganega grapes for 'Monte Majore' are planted in basaltic volcanic soil, giving this wine beautiful saltiness that perfectly balances a naturally high acid, orchard fruit forward wine with a more savory finish. As a fan of Soave wine, I was pleasantly surprised that at the price point for this wine that is not only a pleasure to drink now, but certainly has the potential to age and develop even more complexity.
