Bouzeron "Les Bouillottes", Dom. Guy Amiot - 2021

Item # 40649 750 mL

The Bouzeron appellation is relatively new and is the name for wines coming from the southern area of Burgundy known as the Côte Chalonnaise. This is a white wine that's made from the Aligoté grape. The Amiot is especially rich as it was partially aged in French oak Barrels. Try with a shrimp and avocado salad.

Staff Pick Notes

Wines that express duality are incredible, and one at a reasonable price all the more so. An example is Bouzeron, the only AOC devoted entirely to Burgundy's second white grape Aligote. Situated due south of the Cote de Beaune (Chassagne Montrachet is a few km north) it yearns for higher regard. Plenty can be said about Aligote's neglected place in wine history - traditionally thought of as simple and an ingredient in the Kir cocktail- yet another way to look at it is the enormous potential. And wine makers in Burgundy have taken notice and treated it as it's own. Aligote has a lively mineral expression, and this comes through beautifully from vineyards planted in the limestone clay soils of Bouzeron. This pure minerality is layered with hints of cream and spices from 12 months oak aging. A satisfyingly fresh combination.

Glossary

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Aligoté

The "other" white grape of Burgundy, Aligoté plays a struggling second fiddle to the regal white grape of the region, Chardonnay. Older Aligoté vines have been known to produce wines of high quality, displaying lovely citrusy and at times nutty characteristics - but even so, the remaining plantings of the grape are fast being uprooted to make even more space for the cultivation of Chardonnay.
