The seductiveness of Nebbiolo extends to the rare occasion when you find a rosé version. This comes from an incredible, small producer called Ciabot Berton. Their winery is located in the commune of La Morra. After a brief maceration on the skins, the wine is fermented then aged and bottled unoaked.

Ciabòt Berton in the hills of La Morra, Piedmont is the estate of the Oberto family. Marco, Federica and their 3 boys. Chiabot refers to 'a small building' in Piedmont dialect, and a small building does sit on the property, which once belonged to a Berton, who had attempted to manufacture fireworks here, only to burn out the building and destroy its roof. It is a lively, kinetic style of wine that brings me back each time to Ciabot Berton. With some of the freshest fruit in Piedmont coming from La Mora, this Rose is plentiful in skin popping summer strawberry and raspberry, the elegant side of this glass emerges with floral notes of rose and violet. All at the same time smooth, crisp, tart and refreshing. Many consider Rose to be a summer wine, but I will drink this structured and satisfying bottle long into the cooler months.

Piedmont

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara.
