Inconnu Merlot, Carneros - 2017

The Inconnu Merlot is a relatively new bottling created by Laura Brennan Bissell who, after stints at Unti and Matthiasson in California, decided to make wines that are meant for the table. Fermented spontaneously with ambient yeasts and sulphur is kept to a minimum. A must with food at the table as the acidity and earthy nature work so well together. The Merlot vines come from a single vineyard that's west-facing and are planted in "gumbo" soils which, in Carneros, is a mix of clay and loam. Aged in a mix of neutral and second use oak barrels of varying sizes.
