Gattinara, Petterino - 2014

Item # 42398 750mL

Petterino’s wines are classic examples of Gattinara from the northern reaches of Piedmont. His style is elegant and aromatic showing more of the floral side of Nebbiolo (aka Spanna, as it is called in the area) as well as iron, anise and berries. The wines are approachable on release, but have an additional potential for evolution of 10-15 years.

Staff Pick Notes

In my perennial quest for aromatic, floral reds, finding this Gattinara feels like uncovering some rare orchid in a swamp. It's an absolute steal. For a fraction of the price of fellow Piedmonte cousins Barolo and Barbaresco, DOCG Gattinara in the northwest offers similar if not greater longevity due to especially robust tannins and acidity nurtured in an ideal climate for Nebbiolo. Iron-rich soils infuse a rustic minerality, yet this is a somewhat lighter, more aromatic expression of the grape. An elegant bouquet of violets, roses, olives, and anise blooms from the glass to complement tertiary earthy notes on the palate. Esteemed producer Marco Petterino holds some of the best parcels in the appellation and has the courtesy to age and release his wines much later than many of his counterparts. A great value that's ready to drink now.

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara. Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...
