Taro Vinícola Blanco "Frías," Pablo Matallana - 2021

Item # 42640 750mL

A serious white wine made entirely from old-vine Lístan Blanco. The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment on the skins for 13 days and aged on the lees for 9 months. The vines grow in soil that is one meter thick of volcanic ash (locally known as picón). Winemaker Pablo Matallana is working in the central part of Lanzarote, near Timanfaya National Park.

Staff Pick Notes

If you have not yet tried the wines of Pablo Matallana, please do yourself a favor. They are really something else. This is definitely an experience - a magical skin contact wine, restrained yet intense. Made from Lístan Blanco, a variety native to the island, there's a sort of saline, dried peach vibe that's a subtle stand out among the flavors. The soils on the island of Lanzarote are volcanic. The landscape is extremely arid and windswept. These geographic qualities definitely present themselves in this bottle. We often talk about terroir driven wines in the wine business and this is an ideal example, unique, delicious and totally demonstrative of its place.
