Chiroubles, Dom. Chapel - 2023

Item # 43569 750 mL

Call it what you want but it was a chance meeting at Domaine Lapierre nearly a decade ago where David Chapel and his now partner in life, Michele met. Since then, they've started their own estate and line up of Cru Beaujolais that are notable, pure and this Chiroubles is spot on with forward fruit yet good depth and tannins.

Staff Pick Notes

It's hard to believe that David and Michele Chapel have been making wine for a mere five years. The quality and finesse in this bottle alone suggest generations of knowledge and dexterity. Perhaps training at Domaine Lapierre had something to do with it? Their earliest bottling was a wine from Juliénas, but they have since added cuvées from Lantignié, Fleurie, and this gem from Chiroubles. The grapes come from two sites of mostly granite with some sandstone and vines ranging from 40 to 60 years. Farming is organic and everything is done by hand. This is one of the most elegant, refined Beaujolais I've ever had, with delicate red fruit (cherries, strawberries), cloves, and floral notes. Marcel Lapierre would be proud.

Glossary

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is the classic expression of the Gamay grape. These red wines (labeled simply “Beaujolais”) are approachable, grapey, and fun – ideal for low-pressure sipping. Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
